Bengals intellectuals call for Mamata as PM in unison

first_imgKolkata: Prominent intellectuals from Bengal stood by Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in her fight against BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in particular, for dividing people on religious lines and damaging the secular fabric of the country. All the intellectuals who joined a programme at Kolkata Press Club on Tuesday with the slogan of ‘check the communal forces from unleashing a reign of terror in Bengal, an embodiment of communal harmony’, echoed the opinion that Banerjee is the only viable alternative in the country to fight Modi and his fellow BJP leaders, who carry with them a baggage of bigotry and intolerance. Also Read – Bengal family worships Muslim girl as Goddess Durga in Kumari PujaThe intellectuals also made it clear that they want to see the Trinamool supremo, who has the capability to ease the tension and fear prevailing among the people across the country, as the Prime Minister. They also strongly objected to BJP president Amit Shah’s remark that Bengalis have been turned to Kangals (beggars). Renowned artist Shuvaprasanna Bhattacharya said: “Saffron is the colour of sacrifice. A political party with a saffron flag is trying to spark communal tension in Bengal. We came across a rally (one attended by Amit Shah) while coming here. Where are these people coming from? They certainly do not look like our fellow citizens. They were shouting objectionable slogans and showing gestures which the people here in Bengal are not familiar with.” Also Read – Bengal civic volunteer dies in road mishap on national highway”We must prevent the extremism and intolerance triggered by some people in the state. They are coming from outside the state and maligning Bengal. Our Chief Minister had hinted many days ago at the attempts to spread communal tension, which is being witnessed now. These communal forces are targeting Banerjee as they are scared of her. We must build opinions and support her,” he added. Economist Abhirup Sarkar said that the saffron party has been trying to destroy institutions including the Reserve Bank of India, which gives an idea as to which direction our democracy is heading toward. “The institutions which are supposed to keep a vigil on the ‘Chowkidar’, have been destroyed,” said Sarkar. Well-known singer Kabir Suman said that they must lend support to the Chief Minister, who has given a clarion call to oust Modi. “They have seen a revolution in the development works initiated by her. BJP has waged a war and she must win to restore communal harmony,” the singer said. He also said that he would have slapped Shah, had he been present when the former had termed Bengalis as ‘Kangals’.last_img read more

Ohio State bullpen blows 40 lead to Iowa at Big Ten tournament

OSU junior catcher Jalen Washington (2) swings at a ball during a game against Bethune-Cookman at Bill Davis Stadium on April 1. Credit: Nathan Rubinstein | Lantern photographerAfter being postponed the night before, the fourth-seeded Ohio State baseball team took the field against the No. 8 seed Iowa Hawkeyes trying to move two games closer to a Big Ten championship.Greg Beals’ team had been riding high coming into Friday winning 13 of its last 15 games. Senior starting pitcher John Havird retired Hawkeye after Hawkeye while the offense dug in and capitalized on nearly every presented opportunity. OSU tacked on two runs in the sixth, and sophomore right fielder Tre’ Gantt singled to straight-away center in the top of the ninth to pad the cushion for OSU, extending the lead to 4-0 over Iowa. However, the smooth-sailing through eight and one-half innings quickly capsized the Buckeyes in the bottom half of the ninth. After receiving eight scoreless innings from senior starter John Havird, OSU called upon sophomore reliever Seth Kinker to finish the game. Kinker, who entered the day with an ERA of 1.33, struggled right out of the gate as he faced the top of the Iowa order. The Hawkeyes strung together four consecutive hits to lead off the inning to cut the deficit to 4-1. Kinker forced senior catcher Daniel Moriel to ground into a double play which did allow one extra run to score. Sophomore first baseman Austin Guzzo singled up the middle to drive in a run and draw Iowa within one. With a runner on first and the score now 4-3, the Buckeyes called on senior left-handed reliever Michael Horejsei to come in and get the final out of the game. The first batter he faced, senior pinch-hitter Jimmy Frankos, was hit by a pitch, putting the winning run on first base. Redshirt sophomore closer Yianni Pavlopoulos was the third reliever of the inning brought in to try and nail down this game. With runners on first and second, Pavlopoulos surrendered a single to redshirt junior Devin Pickett that tied the game up at four.Following a scoreless tenth inning from the Buckeyes, Iowa would load the bases on the strength of a four-pitch walk, a fielder’s choice bunt, and a hit-by-pitch. With a 1-1 count, junior infielder Mason McCoy singled to right center field to send the Hawkeyes home as winners, 5-4 in extras. For many, this harkened back to the demoralizing loss in the first round of last year’s Big Ten tournament with OSU pitted against Iowa. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, then OSU’s senior closer Trace Dempsey walked a batter and surrendered a walk-off two-run home run to Iowa’s senior infielder Nick Day. OSU was eliminated from the tournament on the next day against No. 6 seed Indiana.Against Iowa, John Havird gave up only two hits with no walks and four strikeouts in eight scoreless frames while Iowa senior starting pitcher Tyler Peyton struck out five and issued no walks over seven innings of five hit, three run baseball. Peyton struck out five and walked none, but hit two batters with pitches. Neither starter factored into the decision. The Buckeyes will hope to stave off elimination and continue their run in this year’s Big Ten tournament where they will take on the fifth-seeded Michigan Wolverines at 10 p.m. on Friday. OSU defeated the Wolverines 8-3 on Wednesday night. read more

Quick Hits Ohio State football news and notes

First-year Ohio State head coach Luke Fickell lauded Buckeye Nation’s contribution to Saturday’s win against then-No. 12 Wisconsin and senior running back Daniel “Boom” Herron said he thinks the offense could score 50 points against Indiana (1-8, 0-5) during a Tuesday press conference. Neither addressed the forthcoming decision from the NCAA regarding the football program’s rules violations, though a university spokeman told The Lantern Tuesday that the expected announcement date of the ruling is “hard to predict.” A nod to students Fickell began his remarks by thanking the OSU students and fans for helping create an atmosphere at Ohio Stadium that he said was “unbelievable.” “(I) wouldn’t want to start any other way but to thank the fans, the crowd and the students for an unbelievable atmosphere this weekend,” Fickell said. Fickell said he even needed he wife’s reassurance that the Horseshoe, which held 105,511 fans on Saturday, was as loud as he perceived it. “Sometimes, I had to get in the car afterward, ask my wife to make sure I saw and felt that atmosphere as well as it was,” he said. “I wasn’t sure if it was my heart that was pounding or the screams from the crowd, but it was an unbelievable atmosphere, unbelievable experience, just to be a part of something, obviously a game like that. But that’s what Ohio State football’s all about.” “Signature” win? Not a chance With the 33-29 win against the then-No.12 Badgers Saturday, Fickell clinched his second consecutive win against a ranked opponent. OSU beat then-No.16 Illinois, 17-7, on Oct. 15. Fickell rejected the notion that Saturday’s win was a “signature” win in his young career as a head coach, saying, “Every win is big.” “The way it was won, obviously, maybe that might mean something different, the atmosphere it was won in,” he said. “But still it goes down the same on the schedule — it goes down as a win.” Running the score up on Indiana The Indiana Hoosiers, which have allowed opponents to score 204 points combined in their last four games, could be in for more trouble Saturday. OSU senior running back Daniel “Boom” Herron said he wants the Buckeyes to score 50 points against the Hoosiers. “Yeah, I mean, you gotta look at it that way. Whatever we could do to put points on the board,” Herron said. “I think it’s possible. It’s definitely possible.” All crickets on the NCAA front After its Aug. 12 hearing with the NCAA in Indianapolis regarding the football program’s infractions, the university originally expected the final ruling to arrive sometime during the Buckeyes’ four-game stretch between Oct. 8, when they traveled to Nebraska, and this Saturday’s home game against Indiana. There was no mention Tuesday of the NCAA violations, or when the ruling would be handed down. In a Tuesday email to The Lantern, OSU spokesman Jim Lynch said that since additional violations were considered by the NCAA after the Aug. 12 hearing, “We (OSU and the NCAA) are no longer on the same timetable.” As a result, Lynch said in the email that it is difficult for him to predict when the ruling will be announced. read more

Valverde insists Coutinho  must fight for starting spot

first_imgBarcelona manager Ernesto Valverde insists Philippe Coutinho remains a great player but must fight for his place in the club’s starting lineup.Coutinho started a domestic match for the first time since the first week of December last year and scored from the penalty spot as a much-changed Barcelona side lost 2-1 at Levante in the first leg of their Copa del Rey tie on Thursday night. The former Liverpool Man’s goal gave the Copa Del Rey holders reason for optimism ahead of the second leg next week, having fallen two goals within the first 20 minutes of the first half.Ousmane Dembele also played the entire duration of the game like Coutinho and Valverde insists he was satisfied with both players while encouraging them to press for continued opportunities.“When Dembele wasn’t playing, everyone was asking me about him,” Valverde told reporters, according to FourFourTwo.Jose Mourinho, Lionel MessiMourinho: “Lionel Messi made me a better coach” Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Jose Mourinho believes the experience of going up against Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi at Real Madrid made him a greater coach.“Now Dembele’s playing and Coutinho isn’t and the reverse is happening. When you do not play and you are not happy, you have to fight to change the situation. Today was a match for that.”“Coutinho is a great player who has given us a lot and will give us a lot. I will say the same about Dembele. It’s a repetitive question with interchangeable names.”Valverde also defended his team selection, after leaving out Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba, saying:“I picked the best team I thought we could pick.”“It served us to evaluate players in some tough moments, like in a LaLiga game. I know it’s a risk, but you have to take risks a lot of the time.”last_img read more

SmokeFree Workplace Bill At A Stand Still

first_imgSenator Peter Micciche (R-K-Pen) is the sponsor of the bill: “The Rules Chair (LeDoux) suggested in an interview that she is waiting for some negotiation, and I will just tell you that I don’t trade. I don’t look at legislation that way, legislation needs to stand on it’s own and if it has support it should go to the floor.” The bill creates exceptions for retail tobacco or e-cigarette stores and for legally operating marijuana businesses, provided they meet certain requirements. Story as aired: Audio PlayerJennifer-on-smokefree-workplace-bill.mp3VmJennifer-on-smokefree-workplace-bill.mp300:00RPd Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享Senate Bill 63, the Smokefree Workplace bill, is currently in the House Rules committee. It has passed the Senate and over half of the House has signed on as cosponsors, but one lawmaker is standing in the way of that bill moving any further. State Representative Gabrielle LeDoux chairs the House Rules Committee and decides which bills make it to the floor. She has halted moving the bill, which overwhelmingly passed the Senate last year and enjoys widespread support in the House — half the body’s 40 members have signed as co-sponsors.center_img But LeDoux told reporters last month that the state should not be “cramming down the throats” of municipalities a program they may not want. A similar measure failed in 2016 after clearing the Senate, dying in a different committee that LeDoux then chaired. SB 63 would “[prohibit] smoking in certain places,” covering most workplaces where there is one or more employee.last_img read more

Tuesday’s trade saw the rupee closing at 55.39/40 to the dollar.  The currency’s progressive fall in the past couple of days has drawn attention from the government, with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee saying on Tuesday that the centre is keeping a close watch on the situation and that necessary measures are taken to tackle the rupee’s impact on the foreign exchange market.”Global slowdown due to unfolding of eurozone sovereign debt crisis has, inter-alia, impacted the Indian economy through deceleration in exports, widening of trade and current account deficit, decline in capital flows, fall in the value of Indian Rupee, stock market decline and lower economic growth,” Mukherjee told the Rajya Sabha.Mukherjee assured that the RBI is intervening in the Forex market to help curb volatility.”Raising of NRI deposit interest rates, easing availability of export credit and stipulation that 50% of balances in the Exchange Earner’s Foreign Currency Account be converted into rupees balances”, are some of the measures being adopted by the central bank, he said. The finance minister also added that the centre is working towards boosting India’s infrastructure sector by increasing direct foreign investment. Other steps include “liberalization of external commercial borrowings (ECB) policy and portfolio investment norms besides steps to improve access to corporate bond market through Infrastructure Debt Funds.””A number of legislative measures/amendments have also been taken for fiscal consolidation/reforms and financial sector reforms”, Mukherjee noted.last_img read more

Fewer International Graduate Students Are Enrolling In Texas Public Universities

first_img 00:00 /00:56 X The council’s Hironao Okahana said that decline was partially caused by visa-related concerns. “There seems to be sort of consensus on some of the concerns we have with the uncertainties revolving around the immigration and visa policies in the United States,” he said. According to Okahana, economic factors in students’ home countries could also be playing a role.Masters applications dropped 17 percent at a sampling of Texas schools. In 2018, Immigration and Customs Enforcement released a report that found overall international student enrollment in Texas schools dipped 2.2 percent to 86,076.The data contrasts with a slight increase in the number of Texas institutions that are certified to accept international students. In Houston, over 120 campuses serve international students. One of those institutions is Houston Baptist University, which welcomes the majority of its international students from Nigeria and China. The university’s Director of International Student Services Shannon Bedo previously told Houston Public Media many of her students fear instability around immigration and come to her with rumors. “If they go home to visit their families, they are afraid their visa wouldn’t be renewed so they can come back and finish their studies,” Bedo said.  Listen Sharecenter_img University of HoustonA graduation ceremony at University of Houston.Texas public universities enrolled 15,713 international students in masters programs in 2018 — the lowest number in at least five years. The Motion Copy System uses motion capture in a new way to faithfully recreate the strokes of master calligraphers. Calligraphy is done by dipping a paint brush in ink and then using it to paint characters on a piece of paper. Creating traditional kanji characters requires more than back and forth swiping however, it also involves up and down movements of the brush to create different effects, based on the force of the hand. The new robot arm captures these force strokes by use of a new kind of capture mechanism, a brush with independent brush handle segments. One segment is attached to the robot arm, it holds the brush head and performs the inking. The other segment is used by a human calligrapher and is held above the brush head. As characters are painted, seemingly in the air, the brush segment held by the robot mimics the action and relays information about what it is doing to its processing unit which converts it into data that can be used later to recreate the calligrapher’s movements. The end result is a robot arm that can faithfully reproduce the calligraphy style of individual artists. The researchers say their device can be used to store the different stylings of professional calligraphers to help preserve an art form that is slowly dying out due to lack of interest by young people in the country today. The Motion Copy System was demoed at the recent Ceatec 2012 tech show in Tokyo. Up till now, motion capture machines for teaching robots to write have been based on two dimensional systems. A person holds a pen or stylus and writes words on a base tablet. The method for recreating the characters is recorded by noting the order in which the characters are drawn or by attaching another stylus to the first and then mimicking its actions. The Motion Copy System is based on the second approach, but takes it into a third dimension.last_img read more
