Highland Village Celebrates Oldtime Scottish Christmas

first_imgThe Highland Village Museum will celebrate Christmas in the spirit of the Gaelic past with Céilidh Na Nollaig (The Christmas Visit). An open house hosted by costumed animators will take place on Saturday, Dec. 1, and Sunday, Dec. 2, from noon to 4 p.m. Traditionally, the Scottish way of celebrating Christmas in Cape Breton focused on the significance of the holidays by attending church services and socializing with family and neighbours. In keeping with the Gaels’ celebration of the season, Highland Village will bring old Christmas to life with two afternoons of good fellowship, music and song, in its historic buildings at Hectors Point. This all-age event will feature Gaelic singing, music and food, which was typical in Gaelic homes at the time of An Nollaig (Christmas). Visitors will be able to sample bonnach (bannock), arain mhilis (sweet breads) and candies at MacLeod’s General Store. Hot cider will also be served. Highland Village will also accept donations for the Barra Food Bank instead of an admission fee. For more information, call Highland Village at 902-725-2272last_img
